The wear-metals / condition monitoring angle. South African mining and heavy transport operate very large condition-monitoring programmes on haul trucks, draglines, mills, locomotives and hydraulic systems. An unplanned gearbox failure costs orders of magnitude more than the monitoring programme that would have predicted it. The ASX-1400 and ASX-1600 autosamplers were developed for exactly this application — they homogenise each sample with a variable-speed stirring paddle immediately before aspiration.
