Discover 2.0
A single-mode (focused) microwave synthesiser for research-scale chemistry — concentrating microwave energy at a single focal point for very high energy density and rapid, clean reactions.
Reactions that take hours become minutes.
The Discover 2.0 concentrates microwave energy at a single focal point for very high energy density, precise temperature control and rapid, clean reactions — turning reactions that take hours or days into processes completed in minutes. Rapid, uniform, volumetric heating eliminates the thermal gradients that drive side reactions. Sealed vessels allow solvents to be superheated far above their atmospheric boiling points, dramatically accelerating kinetics, while instant-on/instant-off control prevents overheating. The result is frequently higher yields, cleaner product profiles and less purification work downstream.
Extending the reaction envelope.
Enables microwave-enhanced reaction rates at low temperatures — simultaneously heats the sample with microwave energy while cooling the vessel exterior. Used for temperature-sensitive chemistry: carbohydrate chemistry, eliminations, substitutions, carbanions and highly reactive intermediates.
Allows reactions requiring gaseous reagents under pressure: hydrogenations, carbonylations, reactions with CO₂, NH₃ or other gases.
Broadly applicable across synthetic chemistry.
Rapid iteration through analogue series; synthesis of complex heterocycles and other structures.
Quantum dots, zeolites, metal oxides, nitride powders, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), gold and silver nanomaterials, nanocomposites, lithium-ion battery materials.
Broadly applicable to synthetic chemistry across organic, inorganic and organometallic chemistry.
A research tool, not a production tool.
University chemistry and materials science departments across South Africa, national science councils and research institutes working on process chemistry, pharmaceutical R&D groups, and materials science research groups working on battery materials, MOFs and nanomaterials.

Questions we are asked about the Discover 2.0.
The Discover 2.0 is a single-mode, or focused, microwave synthesiser: it concentrates microwave energy at a single focal point for very high energy density, precise temperature control, and rapid, clean reactions.
Yes, with the appropriate accessory. CoolMate enables microwave-enhanced reaction rates at low temperatures for temperature-sensitive chemistry. The Gas Addition Module allows reactions with gaseous reagents under pressure, such as hydrogenations and carbonylations.
Research results from the Discover 2.0 can be scaled in the MARS 6 Synthesis configuration, using a 5 L round-bottom flask for batch scale-up or up to 12 pressurised vessels in parallel for multi-gram synthesis.
Medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, materials science (quantum dots, zeolites, metal oxides, MOFs, nanomaterials, battery materials), and academic research chemistry broadly across organic, inorganic and organometallic chemistry.
