South Africa's drinking water quality standard covers chemical determinands including metals — lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, chromium, nickel, aluminium, iron and manganese among others. Compliance is expressed as a percentage of samples meeting limits across a year, meaning consistent monitoring of large numbers of samples is a regulatory necessity. SANS 241 notes that samples for metals analysis should not be filtered but acidified to below pH 2 — a sample preparation instruction directly within MAD's product territory.

These numbers drive polymer dosing optimisation, blending in composting and chemical stabilisation, solids loading for dewatering equipment, wasting rates for biological systems, and organic fraction in influent.
Dewatering polymer is one of the largest chemical costs at a treatment works. Sludge transport is charged by weight, most of which is water. A 1% improvement in cake solids meaningfully reduces trucked tonnage. Real-time solids measurement (SMART 6 Wastewater, approximately 2 minutes) makes operational adjustments possible within the shift rather than the following morning — directly relevant to the Department of Water and Sanitation's Green Drop assessment, which scores treatment works on process control and monitoring.
